Why is Suck Up not available on Steam?

AI is a relatively new technology. As a result, many platforms, including Steam, are in the process of establishing clear guidelines regarding the use of AI in video games. Although we're enthusiastic about the possibility of being on Steam, for the time being, we're distributing Suck Up independently until there's more certainty in the platform policies.

What are AI Tokens and why are they needed?

For almost all games today, when a player downloads and installs a game, the game is run “locally”, meaning the computations required for the game are handled directly by the player’s PC. The cost to the developer when a player plays the game is zero, or very close to zero. This is not the case with Suck Up. Whenever you talk to an NPC, that AI interaction is handled on the server side, and we as developers pay a cost to run each of these interactions.

You might ask: could we just let the players run the AI models on their own PCs rather than running on our servers? The answer today is sadly no. The computational power required to run AI models today is beyond the capabilities of personal computers. We believe in the medium future, as AI models become more efficient and PCs get more powerful, this will become possible. In that future, there would be no need for AI tokens, and we're working towards that.

In the meantime, we want to balance between giving players fair value for entertainment and making sure we can sustainably operate as an indie studio. Our solution is to provide 10,000 AI Tokens for each purchase, which you can think of as credits. These tokens allow players to play approximately 40-50 hours. For the vast majority of players, we believe it’s more than sufficient to experience the game in totality.

Does that mean the game time is hard capped to the token limit today? Unfortunately, yes. Suck Up is still very new, and we will continuously look for ways to increase the token limit and add ways to top up tokens at a fair price to players (coming soon). Nonetheless, we want to be very transparent with this limitation today as you make your purchase.

With Suck Up, we want to provide a type of gaming experience at the frontier of technology and human experience. But with frontier technology, there are also tradeoffs and limitations in operating such experience. We hope for your understanding in this case.
